    The course introduces the fundamental concepts of occupational health, enabling students to characterize health/illness and occupational medicine, analyze organizational reality, plan prevention policies and procedures, and promote a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and worker well-being.

    1. Public health as a discipline of occupational health.  2. Occupational Health. Historical development of occupational medicine.  2.1 The legal framework for occupational health in the European Union and Portugal.  2.2 Accidents at work and occupational diseases.  3. Main source of employment conditions, some specific pathologies.  4. Major policy instruments and management of occupational health.  6 General principles and ethical guidelines for the practice of occupational medicine and the health and safety: general aspects.  
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    O1. To present the introductory concepts of occupational health;  O2. know the main themes of occupational health;  O3. Characterize health and disease, present  the most relevant aspects of occupational medicine;  O4. Analyze the organizational reality in terms of occupational health,  O5. plan and develop policies and prevention  procedures in occupational health,  O6. develop a safety culture in which risk prevention,  health promotion and constant improvement of working conditions and quality of life are systematic.  At the end of curricular unit students should be able to: C1. Using the methods and techniques applied in the context of occupational health reflecting such use in making timely and appropriate decisions on occupational health prevention. C2. Adopt attitudes of accuracy, updating and continuous improvement in terms of occupational health human resources.

    Face-to-face: 1. Interrogative methodology for critical reflection and consolidation of knowledge in interaction with the teacher. 2. Active methodologies in the classroom, through group work, case studies, and design thinking moments oriented towards the practical application of content. 3. Use of gamification. Independent work: 4. Individual consolidation through guided reading, problem solving, and in-depth study of the content covered in the in-person sessions.

    A avaliação curricular será realizada através de: teste individual, cuja ponderação será 60% na nota final do semestre; trabalho cuja avaliação terá uma ponderação de 40% na nota final do semestre. 
    Em época de exame final/recurso/especial, será realizado um exame, o qual valerá 100% da nota final.
