    This course aims to facilitate the learning of theoretical and practical problems and issues relating to general economics and transport. Learning the theoretical and practical concepts of general economics will provide a better understanding of the specificities of the transport economy and its importance in the national context.

    1.. Introduction and definition of transport economics; importance of the sector in the economy. 2. Analysing transport markets 2.1 Individual and collective road passenger transport. 2.2 Passenger railways. 2.3 Freight, road and rail. 2.4 Air transport. 2.5 Maritime freight. 3. The mutual influence of transport on the location of people and activities; location models; externalities in cities. 4. Transport costs: for the user; with infrastructures; external and for operators. 5. Transport demand: the time constraint; generalised cost; modelling. 6. Organising supply.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    The objectives of the course are - Know the fundamental concepts of economics.(O1) - Explain how these concepts can be applied to a range of economic problems.(O2) - Recognise the importance of transport to the economy.(O3) - Characterise the main modes and systems of transport in Portugal, identifying market leaders. Understand the relationship with economic activity, localisation and the urban economy.(O4) -Recognise the specificities of transport demand.(O5) - Characterise the specificities of transport costs and the consequences for market structures and economic efficiency; (O6) - Deal with negative externalities such as congestion and pollutant emissions; (O7) - Distinguish between strands and currents of transport regulation; (O8) - Outline principles for an appropriate transport policy; (O9)
